Captain’s Prize

The final of Captain Joe Slevin’s prize was run without a hitch in perfect weather conditions on Sunday. The also-rans had a shotgun start at the early hour of 8am with the leaders all driving off at 1pm.

President Tony McTague in introducing the Captain noted that Joe was the first Kilcormac man to be Captain of the Club,  had worked tirelessly for the promotion of golf in Birr and had been an excellent leader during his time at the helm. Joe in reply thanked Bernard Kennedy who invited him to be Captain. He knew it was going to be an onerous task but with the help of the many members and the various staffs and committees his work was made both enjoyable and productive. He was extremely grateful to Paschal and Catherine Troy for their very generous sponsorship and he wished them continued success with their Sales Company. He was especially grateful to Lady Captain Rita, Lady President Gemma and the Ladies Committee for their great work and wished the team well in the Mid Leinster final in Roscrea on Sunday. As this was the first occasion when the Juniors took part he was happy to have introduced this competition as Juniors were the lifeblood of a club and hopefully they will carry on the traditions of the Glenns.

He thanked his wife Dolores and his family who were more or less ‘orphaned’ during the year.

He congratulated all who won prizes and in particular Pat Doyle who had an exciting tussel with Seamie Breen for the coveted prize. The spectators were delighted to see it going to a 3-hole playoff. He noted that Pat was well used to winning as he is the proud owner of nine County Senior medals for football. This was his first major on the golf course and he wished him further success.

In conclusion Captain Joe called on all to support the Club in these difficult times and quoted Abraham Lincoln who said, ‘Everyone has the right to criticise if they have the heart to help out.’

Pat Doyle in accepting his prize said he was thrilled to have won Joe’s prize and praised all who had made the occasion so noteworthy.
