Inter Club Matches

Well done to all our teams this week who started the year on a winning streak. On Thursday our Duggan cup Team Defeated Tullamore 4/1 Managers John Kelly and Roddy Molloy fielded a strong team. At Home were Pat Molloy & Tom Wright, Brian Guinan & Michael Stephens and John Wims & Dick Johnston. Away were Pat Doyle & John Kelly and PJ Lowry & John Murphy. The next match is against Roscrea

On Saturday the Provincial Towns Team played Abbeyleix and after a close battle came through by 5.5 to 2.5, winning two of the away matches. The team was: Home - Andy Masterson, Brendan Hoare, Pat Madden and John Irwin. Away - Matt Feenane, PJ Lowry, Jonathon Kelly, Tommy Hogan and Tom Moylan. Well done to the team managers Seamus Breen and Christy Purcell.

Sand Martins

Our sand martins have arrived to their homes at the 6th tee once again and following a visit to the club by RTE wildlife presenter Colin Stafford Johnston and his camera crew, this unique habitat will feature on his new wildlife programme to be screened by RTE next year.

Easter Competition

 The annual Easter Competition took place on last Saturday and Wednesday and the results are as follows:

 Australian Spoons

 Ladies, please note that the Australian Spoons Competition is extended to 30th April. A small number of ladies have played but please take advantage of this wonderful weather and play in the Spoons! Best of luck to all.

 

Fr. Starkan Charity Day

The Annual Fr. Starkan Charity Day takes place on Monday 2nd May – as usual your support would be very much appreciated. Timesheet available in the Clubhouse or contact Anne McIntyre to enter a team of four.

 

Lady Members Prize

The second Golfer of the Year Competition very kindly sponsored by A & A Hair Studio, Portlaoise takes place on Sunday 8th May – the list for entries are available and please ensure you have your name down for the draw for partners which will take place on Thursday, 5th May. 

 Open Week

Open Week is fixed from Sunday 15th – 22nd May this year.   The Ladies Open Day will take place on the Wednesday, 18th May with Monaincha Health and Spa, Roscrea sponsoring the Ladies Day.   An ideal opportunity to invite your playing friends from neighbouring clubs to play in the Glenns and the chance of winning a pampering session in Monaincha!

 A.A. Team News

 As promised we hope to keep you up to date on upcoming fixtures in the A.A. Club Matches.  

 The Junior Cup Team played on Monday, 18th April against Mullingar in Moate and recorded a superb win over the Mullingar ladies.   This was a huge boost to the Birr team as they proved to be too strong in all matches.  Team Captain Anne Frawley left no stone unturned to ensure victory and is looking forward to the next round against Abbeyleix at a date to be arranged.  The team consisted of Anne Kenny, Susan Reidy, Mairéad McIntyre, Martina O’Brien and Vera Smyth. Sheila Brennan and Mary Grennan are also on the panel.

The Irish Mixed Foursomes versus Tullamore also took place on Friday, 22nd April with 2 pairs at home and 3 pairs away.   Birr had a wonderful win over a very keen Tullamore side taking the two matches at home with the second match going to the 20th before Seamie Breen and Carina Gleeson clinched the match.   Lady Captain Rita and Michael Yates had already secured the first match at this stage. In Tullamore,  P.J. Lowry and Liz Nolan secured their match at the 16th.   Roger Byrne and Angela Hough went down at the 18th in Tullamore while Enda Carroll and Mary Grennan had their opponents taken care of by the 16th in a superb match. Congratulations to the Birr team and Team Captains Michael Horan and Vera Smyth.  A sincere thank you to Tullamore for wonderful sporting matches on the day played in ideal summer conditions.

The Junior Foursomes play Highfield in Tullamore on Saturday, 30th April – Team Captain Mary Ryan    

The Senior Foursomes play Rathdowney in Roscrea on Sunday May 1st – Team Captain Yvonne Boland.

The Minor Cup team play Athy in Tullamore on Saturday, 7th May – Team Captain Colette O’Brien

The Challenge Cup team play Athy in Roscrea on Monday, 9th May – Team Captain Liz Pardy
